The Silent Dangers of Chronic Inflammation

Do you ever feel like just cancelling plans and staying inside? Maybe you find yourself on couch arrest and avoiding human interactions, because you just "can't"? It's perfectly natural. We all need a break every now and then. Life is busy and being home on the couch can be a great relief. However,  if you find yourself wanting to just "veg out" and avoid other people too often, there could be a pretty legit health concern lurking.

You could have chronic inflammation.

Chronic, low grade inflammation masks itself as fatigue and feeling antisocial.

It's similar to the achy, tired feeling you get when you are "sick". Like at the end of a long work week, but it never ends. You never really feel refreshed.

You do not want to go out of the house.

You want to hunker down for a while. The reason why you feel this way is because your body goes into resting/healing mode. You don't have a temp or a cold, but you are sick as in......unwell. Your body needs to reserve energy. You have been exposed to too many chemicals. Too many preservatives . Too many unhealthy foods.

Chronic inflammation causes a chronically low energy and a low mood level. It makes it hard to make changes or think about the future. You are just way too tired. So, you keep staying home after work rather than working out or being active, or even going out to eat. You keep sleeping right until you have to get up for work. The days whirl by, but not much changes. You just feel tired. I've been there friend. I know it's not fun.

Chronic, low grade inflammation hangs around a while, because....

1) There isn't a lot of awareness about it, so you don't even know what's happening. Your doctor won't diagnose it.
2) You are too tired to do anything about it. It's a hard rut to pull out of. (but you can do it!)

Bedroom, Bed, Apartment, Room

It  won't give you a high temp, and it won't give you an illness with a well known name. When you go to the doctor, he may even dismiss you as lazy or depressed. Low grade inflammation causes you to feel antisocial, tired and overwhelmed. There may be symptoms of anxiety or depression, especially if the inflammation continues over a long period of time. It can also cause headaches which may come and go, and will be worse on stressful days.

In the long term, chronic inflammation does eventually turn into illness. You may get a cold or the flu, or you may get cardiovascular disease or cancer. The "low grade" threat eventually escalates. This is why it's important to identify and treat chronic inflammation. There is hope for feeling better, and it may be easier that you think.

Here are three changes that can help lower inflammation.

Eat more plants.  Studies show that plant based diets help lower inflammation. A plant based diet improves energy and moods, which is definitely from the antioxidants ability to lower inflammation. Remember that t his doesn't mean you give up meat altogether; you just eat less of it. You eat more vegetables and enjoy new flavors. It's a nice process. You can also enjoy delicious plant based proteins like Plexus Lean Vegan.  It also has vitamins added, like active folate which directly supports lowering inflammation.

Eat less gluten (or go gluten free). I know this one sounds daunting at first, but it's one of the smartest eating habit changes you can make if you are trying to reach a higher level of health. Gluten causes inflammation, especially American grown gluten and especially large amounts. It adds up fast. Pizza, pasta, donuts, bread, muffins, cookies and casseroles.....it's in just about everything these days. Avoiding gluten can substantially lower inflammation within about a week. Full recover from over eating gluten involves gut healing and can take longer, about two or three months.

Lower Sugar intake. Yep, here's another thing you may not want to give up, but it could be the cause of your woes. Refined sugar is pro-inflammatory. It also requires a good bit of magnesium for processing, so it tanks magnesium levels. This increases stress, causes sleep disturbance, headaches, hormone imbalance, heart troubles and anxiety. Refined sugar is a very common cause of chronic inflammation.

So there you are. There are three changes you can make that can help you start feeling better really soon. It's a great time of year to start thinking about making healthy changes. The holidays are the perfect time to have more energy, stamina, lower stress, better sleep, a clearer memory, and an overall happier mood. Busy shopping days, work stress and home stress are all going to happen. Being healthier allows you to respond better and to have good days.
