Gut Health and Anxiety

If you are an anxious person, then you know how scary anxiety can be. It leaves you feeling out of control. It can darken your present moments and your thoughts about the future. If anxiety gets worse, it can lead to depression. It's truly something important to pay attention to, and stop saying "this too shall pass".

As a certified nutritionist I know that some people are feeling this way too often. Your body feels the anxiety, and it's not from conscious thoughts you are choosing to feel. If you feel anxious too often, then you may want to consider a few natural ways to lower it, before it gets worse.

Most of the time, if nutritional deficiencies are contributing to anxiety issues, then it's likely a gut problem. There is a direct relationship between gut health and mental health, including anxiety. A healthy gut can properly digest and absorb nutrients, get them into the blood stream, and deliver them to the brain for neurotransmitter production. A leaky gut or inflamed gut (IBS), has less than optimal digestion and nutrient absorption, which effects absorption of b vitamins and amino acids. This eventually leads to lower levels of nutrients in the blood stream, and lower levels of key neurotransmitters in the brain, including GABA.

GABA is critical to feeling calm. GABA is the neurotransmitter that very slightly slows the whirling thoughts and helps us have less anxiety, and more well-being. Chamomile tea increases GABA levels. L-Theanine also increases GABA. More importantly. when you eat a healthy, balanced diet, and take a basic multivitamin, you have a healthy gut, then your brain can make it's own GABA.

I guess my point is that if you don't have a balanced, healthy gut, you may not have a balanced, healthy brain or balanced moods. Gut health is tricky, but there is a trio of products I highly recommend for gut healing from Plexus. It's called the Plexus Triplex.  It includes a drink packet (Slim drink) with pre-biotic fibers and blood sugar regulating nutrients, an effective probiotic, and a detox capsule (Biocleanse) which helps remove toxins from the gut and lower candida. After 3-4 months on these products anxiety will probably decrease. If not, Plexus offers a 60 day money back guarantee.

Working with a nutritionist is another option. I am a certified holistic nutritionist, and I can meet with you and help design a plan to reduce anxiety through just a few changes in eating habits. Most of the time we can work in healthy delicious foods and support mental health and wellbeing, and you can be feeling a lot better within 1 month. It's amazing how well and how fast food works as medicine.

If at all possible, don't start taking prescriptions for anxiety if you haven't given natural solutions a try first. Prescriptions for anxiety will have negative side effects. Unfortunately, they can also increase anxiety and depression long term, and may even result in additional issues.

Natural solutions are definitely the way to go. They are generally safer and will have positive side effects (more energy, better memory, etc) rather than the negative side effects of anxiety medication (could include weight gain, headaches, etc). Let me know if you need help!
