How to Stay on Track While Traveling

Summer vacation is a blessing, and we all look forward to it. We count down the days and get so excited to leave, but there's a question looming. How can we stay on track with eating plans while we travel?

During the year, you may have set nutrition and wellness goals, and implemented changes because of them. Maybe you ate less sugar, tracked your food intake, drank more water, or decided to finally take your vitamins. Going on vacation doesn't have to completely undo all these great changes. Here's a few tips on how to stay on track..... even when you are traveling.

1. You have to maintain the priority. Say it out aloud: "vacation is not a time to completely undo my progress. My health is still important. I want a HEALTHY vacation. When I return I want to feel great!!".

2. Keep drinking your water. Bring your usual bottle or cup so you can keep drinking your water. Dehydration can be a real downer, especially in the summer when the heat makes it a challenge. Drinking your water will keep you out of the hospital for heat stroke, keep your energy up, and will help keep you regular.

3 Get the right pillbox so you can keep taking your vitamins. Put the vitamins in the pillbox and PACK THE PILLBOX!! Take your vitamins as often as you normally take them at home.

4. Don't try to make anything completely off limitss unless is something you never do anyway, like soda. Within reason, let yourself taste the flavors, but eat smaller portions. You will NOT regret good portion control. Split the plate with your spouse, or ask for a 1/2 size plate, especially if you are eating BBQ, steak, fast food or anything full of fat and salt. On the other hand, if a big salad sounds good then go with your plant cravings!

5. Stay active. Planning to take a long walk or a site-seeing hike every day can be very helpful to fend off the post vacation weight gain blues. It can also just help fend off the blues in general...so let's get walking!!

I hope this is helpful. It's not hard to stay on track during vacation; you just have to decide that's what you want to do. The rest will fall into place. A healthy vacation is definitely the very best kind. You'll have more energy, feel great, and your mind will even work better for clear memories of summer fun. What a blessing!
